Paper: Miami Herald, The (FL) Title: TEAM FOOTWORKS TAKING ON MOUNTAINS IN OREGON HOOD TO COAST Date: August 24, 1999 Laurie Huseby doesn't really know what it feels like to run down a mountain. A South Florida runner for close to 30 years, the closest she comes to mountains around here is the Rickenbacker Causeway. But Friday, Huseby and nine other South Floridians will get their share of the quad-numbing experience of descending mountains when Huseby leads Team FootWorks down Oregon's Mount Hood in the 18th annual Hood to Coast race - the longest relay in North America. ``We've known about this race forever and have always wanted to come,'' said Huseby, who will run the first and most treacherous leg of the 195-mile race, a descent of 2,000 feet. ``I'm in shock we were able to pull it off.'' Finding 12 members to fill the roster was the toughest part for Huseby. Before Sunday, the team still had two open spots. ``So many things happen from January to June, it's tough to find people who will keep a commitment,'' said Huseby, who filled the final two spots with runners from South Carolina and Illinois. ``Our roster went from 12 to 10, 10 to 12, 12 to 11 - it was crazy.'' Miami's Betty Winkle, Moises Sztylerman, Jeff and Kelley Foreman, Abby Cadamuro, Sherrie Bieniek, Susie Tillett, Eddie Diaz and Jonathan Malone are the South Florida runners on the team. Each member, who paid approximately $1,200 for the trip, will run three different legs during the race. The race, which will feature more than 12,000 competitors, will continue through the night into Saturday. ``We have no intentions of winning,'' Kelley Foreman said. ``We are marathoners who are just excited to be competing.'' The top six teams receive awards. ``I'd like to finish right at 500,'' Huseby said. Team Dynamo wins Sprint Team Dynamo's Larry DeSario, Chris McKenzie and Victor Schuler teamed up to win the 1999 Florida State Olympic Sprint Championship on Saturday at the Brian Piccolo Park Velodrome in Cooper City. DeSario, who has won the championship four straight years, won the title with McKenzie for the second year in a row. ``We rode for the win, not for the record,'' DeSario said. ``We took it out smoothly and just tried to keep an even pace throughout the ride.'' In the Masters 135+ division, Team Eddy Merckx (Carlo Pacquee, Bill Byatt and Earl Henry) narrowly edged Team Fort Lauderdale Bicycle Club (Tom Prezioso, Stan Singh and Dave Patten) for the title. A.J. Smith took top honors in the exhibition 5-miler. Eric Gerolstein finished second, and Adam Baskin third. * Sunday: Florida Gold Coast Water Championships, 9 a.m., Fleming Key (turn right on North Roosevelt Boulevard, turn right at fourth traffic light or Garrison Bite Marina, go over bridge to next light, turn right into Trumbo point, follow signs to Fleming Key).
