What are the 2008 dates?

Friday August 22nd and Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

What are the

starting times?

The race start times begin at 8:00am Friday and continue in waves every 15 minutes throughout the day until 7:45pm. Each wave has 20-25 teams.

How long has HTC been around?
This will be the 27th consecutive year of the Nike Hood To Coast Relay! The first race took place in August, 1982.
How big is Hood To Coast?
Known as "The Mother of All Relays", HTC is the largest relay in the world, hosting a capped team limit for the past 22 years, and has filled on "Opening Day" of registration for the past 17 years! HTC is also the longest running relay event in Oregon , and hosts the largest beach party on the west coast!

Does HTC have an official charity?
We are strongly committed to The American Cancer Society.  In 2007, participants and sponsors helped raise $224,000 for ACS, double the efforts from 2006!  We highly encourage participants and teams to support the effort to find a cure.  Check our Charity Donation Page for more info and exciting ways to get involved.

Where does the race Start?
Scenic Timberline Lodge (elevation 6,000 ft.), on top of Oregon's tallest mountain, Mt. Hood (11,234 ft).

What is the distance?
The race spans 197 miles, from the top of Mt. Hood to the Pacific Ocean at Seaside.

How many Legs are there?
The race consists of thirty-six (36) Legs. Each runner is required to complete three (3) of the 36.

Each Leg ranges in distance from 3.7 to 7.4 miles. Legs vary in difficulty, from easy to very hard, due to the varying Oregon terrain.

How many members are on each Team?
Each running team consists of between eight and twelve runners.

How many teams

Due to the popularity of the race, we've had to limit the number of teams for the Hood To Coast Relay to 1,000 teams. We've sold out on "Opening Day" for the last 17 years.

Do both team vans need to be at the Timberline Start?
Only Van #1 needs to be at the Start.  Van #2 can meet up with Van #1 at Exchange 6.

Who is eligible to run?

Anyone! Teams come from around the world to participate in the Nike Hood To Coast Relay as well as our partner events, The OfficeMax Portland To Coast Walk and The OHSU Sports Medicine High School Challenge. Each race allows for a diversity of participants, from serious runners/walkers to casual teams out simply to enjoy the wild adventure!

Where can I find a team, find runners for my team, and share/get advice on HTC?
We've created a Bulletin Board on our website exactly for that purpose!  It's a great way to find teammates, get on a team, and ask questions about the race from other participants.

Can I volunteer for race day?
Yes! Each year, the success of the race is dependent upon its volunteers. Teams from the local area are required to supply race volunteers, totaling nearly 4,000 volunteers. Thousands of others are also recruited to volunteer their time to make sure the event is even more successful and safe than ever.

Are there any other activities before or after

the race?

Yes!  Entertainment and activities will be going strong at the biggest beach party on the west coast.  Included in the festivities are vendor booths & freebies, live music on stage all day and dancing at night, as well as recognition and awards ceremonies.  Come join us!

Are there are other events I can do?
Yes! There are also two sister events that occur on the same days. The OfficeMax Portland To Coast Walk Relay and The OHSU Sports Medicine High School Challenge Relay. Both events start in Portland with teams of 12, each person completing two legs rather than three. This course is 2/3rds of The Hood To Coast course.
